San Salvador Sail

This year, to celebrate the 475th anniversary of Juan Cabrillo’s visit to Malibu, the Malibu Adamson House Foundation is excited to have the San Salvador sail into its waters on Thursday October 12th 2017. We are sponsoring the ship's visit as an educational event for children and the community at large. The vessel is a full scale historic replica of the Spanish Galleon that Cabrillo sailed in 1542. The ship will take anchor 300 meters from our pier for 3 days and departs on Saturday October 14th 2017.

This beautiful vessel, the San Salvador, is the property of the San Diego Maritime Museum, a nonprofit organization which specializes in restoring, maintaining, and operating historic vessels. It was built by more than 400 dedicated volunteers and museum staff, under the supervision of 12 professional shipwrights at a cost that eventually reached $7 million. Construction of the replica began in 2011. The new San Salvador was launched five years later.

During the ship's visit there will be three sailing options:

3-hour sail from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday October 12th. Tickets for this charitable event are $120 per sail.

3-hour sail from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday October 13th. Tickets for this charitable event are $120 per sail.

4-hour “Sunset Sailing Experience" (including catered meal), on Saturday October 14th From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets for this charitable event are $250.

Tickets will be sold thru our adamsonhouse.org website and our Visitor Center at the Adamson House. Boarding for the Thursday and Friday Tours begin at 1 p.m. with a 2 p.m. departure. We suggest you arrive at the Malibu Pier by 12:30 p.m.

Important note: Passengers will be taken by a shuttle cruiser to the ship. All passengers must be able to climb a rope ladder and climb over the rail to board the ship. (Tennis shoes or boat shoes are suggested.) All passengers pay full fare.

If you are not sailing, there will be other opportunities to take a closer look at the replica San Salvador while it is in Malibu for this commemorative event. School tours will be scheduled at the Adamson House property with a virtual tour of the ship as it sits in view of the Historic Adamson House. The public is also invited to visit this historic property with docent led tours of the house and a trip to our tile and book filled Visitor Center for your shopping experience. If you happen to be at the Malibu pier on these dates, you can catch a shuttle boat which will be taking groups of 20 people for a 30-minute ocean tour around the exterior of the ship for $20 (tickets will be sold at the Visitor Center). There will be more information for these cruises as the event date nears. This is a charitable event all donations are tax deductible.
